The NHS was founded in 1948 by the Labour government that took over the running of the country following the 1945 general election. Following a successful campaign spearheaded by Health Secretary Aneurin Bevan, two founding principles were established: that the service should meet the needs of everyone and should be free to all at the point of delivery, meaning that for the first time available healthcare and treatment were based on individual need rather than on the ability to pay.
Over the years, the NHS has pioneered a number of life-changing medical advances including the world’s first heart, liver and lung transplants. In the 21stcentury, the NHS pioneered bionic eye surgery, hand transplants and the world’s first genome-sequencing service to help treat severely ill children and babies. Today, the NHS’s GPs and community nurses, hospitals and specialist units, NHS 111 and ambulance services treat some 1.7 million people a day.
