Did you know that November is Men’s Health Awareness Month?
Movember is one of the leading charities that pioneer supporting men’s health in the British Isles and 20 other countries around the globe. Since its inception in 2003, Movember has founded more than 1250 men’s health projects tackling everything from prostate and testicular cancer to mental health, suicide prevention and more.
From 30 Moustaches to 5 Million
Movember’s story started in 2003 when two friends (Luke Slattery and Travis Garone) met for a quiet beer in Melbourne, Australia. At the time moustaches had fallen from favour, but they roped in 30 men willing to bring them back, using an email titled ‘Are you man enough to be my man?’ to raise money for men’s health and the treatment of prostate cancer.
A Hairy Tale
The first 30 ‘Mo Bros’ were so enthusiastic in their moustache growing that the following year they decided to take Movember to the next level, setting up a website and creating a campaign. That year, 450 Mo Bros joined and raised AUD 54,000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. Word also spread to the UK and Spain.
Changing the Face of Men’s Health
The campaign continued to gather momentum and in 2006 the co-founders registered the Movember Foundation as an official Australian charity and began working for the cause full time. More Mo Bros continued to join in from across Australia, New Zealand, the British Isles and Spain.
The Movement Continues
Movember has continued to grow and grow and the campaign now runs in 21 countries and has raised more than AUD 730 million. The focus has also broadened to four key men’s health issues: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity. Through the growth of millions of moustaches there has been a shift in conversation around men’s health and many break-throughs in scientific research.
