Positive thinking techniques that work

Do you associate happiness with achieving certain goals and dreams? On Positive Thinking Day, held on 13 September each year, we wanted to encourage you to take a moment to enjoy the here and now rather than continuously striving for what could be. That doesn’t mean you need to discard your hopes for the future – in fact, learning to have a positive outlook has been shown in studies not only to boost your mood but also to improve your health, immunity and resilience. Read on to discover proven techniques to help you think and feel better.

Understand Mood Drifts

Feeling happy is not a finite way of being and it can be helpful to understand that our emotions are fluid. Accepting that each emotional state comes and goes rather than fixating on what happy looks like can help us to embrace the here and now.

Don’t Delay

Often we live with a sense of anticipated joy linked to the idea of achieving certain life goals – whether to do with our career, family, appearance or home. For many of us these ideals are associated with how we perceive others to be living, often fuelled by social media. It’s worth taking a moment to identify which area of your life might be delaying your joy in this way – it’s through self-awareness that w– can move forward and make positive changes.

Savour the Moment

Think through each of your senses – sight, sound, smell, touch and taste – to take you out of your head and into the physical world. It’s a simple practice that you can use anywhere from your desk to a busy commute. If you are at home, then lighting a scented candle and being aware of the sound of the match as you strike it, the beauty of the flame, the scent of the molten wax and the texture of the container can help you to feel more grounded. All our luxury scented candles are encased in matt-black glass and hand-finished by our expert candle-maker in Suffolk with the perfect balance of wax, wick and fragrance. You can discover our range of scented candles here.

Make a Positivity Box

Why not put together a box (or online folder) filled with photos, cards, quotes and keepsakes that make you feel good? This can also be a fun project to do with children. You then have your own personalised box of positivity to inspire you when you are feeling down.

Dance to the Beat

If you’re just not feeling positive then music can have a powerful ability to shift your mood. Dancing can also help you feel lifted, get your heart pumping and improve energy levels. So why not put on a favourite tune and dance like no one is watching?

Uplifting Fragrances

Each of our collections is made with a fine fragrance expertly blended to bring joy into your day. Choose from the warm botanical notes of The Greenhouse, bittersweet Rhubarb Rhubarb!, the mellow fruity notes of Golden Harvest and more. You can discover our collections here
